Pressure is mounting to force all caregivers to be vaccinated against covid. According to a government source, a bill is being prepared. It would concern the staff of nursing homes and hospitals.

According to several regional media, the text of the law could be examined in Parliament by the end of July, but more likely in September in view of the incompressible legal deadlines.

Target 80% vaccinated

In a letter of June 28, the ministers of Health Olivier Véran and Autonomy Brigitte Bourguignon already warned that if “at least 80% “of staff are not vaccinated by September, we will pave the way for compulsory vaccination for health professionals“.

And Prime Minister Jean Castex thundered on June 30 in the Senate, evoking the recent focus of infection in a nursing home in the Landes: “I am, like all French people, shocked (…) when we see the epidemic reintroducing itself (…) through those whose vocation it is to protect and treat . It is not admissible.“

Four vaccines already mandatory

Nowadays, “only 57% of nursing home professionals and 64% of healthcare professionals have received at least one dose of vaccine“, underlines the Hospital Federation of France (FHF), which also calls for their compulsory vaccination.

Four vaccines are already compulsory for staff in hospitals and nursing homes: those for diphtheria, tetanus, polio and hepatitis B.

Vaccine compulsory for the whole population?

Beyond caregivers, the entire French population could eventually be subject to an obligation to vaccinate. In any case, this is what the president of the Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS), Dominique Le Guludec, said on July 2 on BFMTV by asserting that he “compulsory vaccination should be considered for over 12s in France“depending on the evolution of the epidemic context.
