What is listeria?

Listeria is a bacterium that can cause complications in the most vulnerable: young children, the elderly, patients with low immune defenses, pregnant women. The most common symptoms are fever, headache and sometimes digestive problems (nausea, diarrhea, vomiting).

Neurological complications (meningitis, encephalitis) or sepsis can also occur in some cases. Finally, pregnant women are particularly at risk: listeriosis can lead to miscarriage, premature birth and increases the risk of neonatal infection. The incubation time for listeriosis can be up to eight weeks, requiring prolonged vigilance.
