The association Our Hospital is you, wishes to have a bill adopted to transform the public hospital. On the program of this reform, more beds and more caregivers: “We are asking that the number of caregivers needed to ensure safe quality care be determined” explains Dr Matthieu Lafaurie, infectious disease specialist at Saint Louis hospital and spokesperson for the association.

“In intensive care, for example, we have two nurses for five patients. We ask that this minimum number of caregivers be determined for all the services, according to the type of specialty and the type of person hospitalized ”.

Put an end to vertical organization

Another key point of the proposal put forward by the association: to allow everyone to find their place in the management of the hospital. Today, “Nurses, nursing assistants, other people who contribute to care and users have no place”, in governance regrets Dr Lafaurie.

For Jane Lugan, mother of a child with cystic fibrosis and accustomed to hospitals, it is urgent to involve users, who can “Raise alerts, not just personal ones. It can also concern the working conditions of nursing staff: the quality of care depends on it. ”

More human resources for better care

This mother, who also had the experience of emergency services “Where we see all the misery in the world descend, human tragedies multiply and the service is overwhelmed” knows the efforts of the nursing staff.

“We feel that they are doing everything to be at their best with everyone. But there is exhaustion, they don’t have time ”. A lack of availability which complicates discussions and understanding on the side of patients:“It’s obviously hard when you’re accompanying someone in pain” adds Jane.

A first step towards reform

The first step in initiating the shared initiative referendum desired by the association is to garner the support of 20% of parliamentarians.

A figure that should soon be reached as explained by Matthieu Lafaurie: “We have a real enthusiasm for parliamentarians”, he assures. “We already have the support of 179 parliamentarians. We were at 177 this morning, so you can see that it is very dynamic ”.

Once the signatures have been collected, the text will be presented to the Constitutional Council, which will have to validate it. He will then ask the government to launch a citizen consultation, which will last 9 months.

But to succeed, this referendum will have to obtain the support of at least 10% of the French registered on the electoral lists, that is to say 4.7 million people.
