The government authorized the vaccination of adolescents from June 15. A too rapid decision according to the National Consultative Ethics Committee for which the vaccination of the youngest can wait until the start of the school year.

Vaccination of adolescents: the national ethics committee regrets a decision too “fast”

To achieve collective immunity, it takes 85% of a vaccinated population. Currently, only 50% of adults have received a first dose. And an estimated 20% are still reluctant.

So the government is betting on the vaccination of adolescents who represent 17% of the population. But, for the National Consultative Ethics Committee (CCNE), it is unthinkable to place such a responsibility on the young.

“They can participate in the effort but maybe adults who have not yet been vaccinated should do so before we offer vaccination to a population for whom the benefit is not going to be obvious.” explains Prof. Alexandra Benachi, member of CCNE.

Little data on the vaccine in the youngest

In its opinion, the committee is concerned about the limited data available on the vaccination of young people. And asks for a delay in order to better study the impact of vaccines.

We have no long-term hindsight on the fate of these vaccines. So you are going to tell me that it is the same with adults except that the problem is not the same at all. An adult needs the vaccine because there is a direct benefit for him, while a child does not. So it is one thing to accept possible side effects which are far less than the benefit of the vaccine in adults, it is not completely the same for a child ” adds Prof. Alexandra Benachi.

Finally, on the ethical side, there is also debate here: that of the free consent of adolescents to vaccination, essential in the event of a rebound in the epidemic. The opinion of the Ethics Council remains advisory. The vaccination for adolescents should start well on June 15.
