There are foods with stimulating, disinhibiting and even euphoric effects on our sexuality. Traditionally we talk about aphrodisiac foods to boost desire.

Each era has had its “star” sex foods. In the Middle Ages, it was recommended that women buy and eat artichokes, this allowed them to “keep their buttocks warm”, Louis XV ate celery to increase his sexual vigor. Nowadays, these foods are no longer “sexy” (except perhaps the artichoke which for some people evokes stripping), people today turn instead to foods such as ginger, chocolate …

There are two difficulties with these foods:

  • The 1st is that there are hardly any scientific studies which confirm or deny their effects on sexuality. The fact that a food is rich in zinc, magnesium, B vitamins or the like is not enough to say that it is a stimulant. It potentially is, but it has yet to be proven.
  • The second difficulty is, when the effect is proven, to know the quantity to take.

Watermelons have been shown to boost libido, but this would require eating 2 or 3 a day. Fresh onion juice is a proven and effective sexual enhancer, but a small liter of it should be taken on an empty stomach one hour before sex.

This is why most of these products are rather in food supplements to concentrate them.

Foods harmful to sexuality

Strictly speaking, there are no foods that have a sexually negative effect. On the other hand, the overall quality of our food can affect our sexual functioning.

A diet too rich in sugar, salt and animal fats, can end up damaging the functioning of the small arteries which are essential to make the genital areas work. It can also interfere with the functioning of the sex hormone through the accumulation of abdominal fat.

Recent European studies estimate that a third of people, men or women, suffering from sexual difficulties (libido, orgasm, pleasure, erection) could improve their sexual problem simply by improving their diet.

Recommended food for sexuality

Several types of food have been developed and tested to assess their impact on sexuality. The diet that most often tops the list in studies is the famous so-called Mediterranean diet.

It is the most varied diet and the richest in vegetables, legumes, fruits, aromatic herbs, dried fruits, spices, seafood etc. That is to say, almost all foods known to be aphrodisiacs.

It is also one of the diets that has the best protective effect on the arteries and on weight gain.

The role of drinks on sexuality

Drinks such as coffee, green tea and cocoa are known to have a so-called “anti-oxidant” effect which is very useful especially for limiting the effects of sexual aging.

All anti-oxidant foods play this role of “slowing down” sexual aging, including the apple, which is a food available to all.

An Italian study found that women over 50 who ate more than 2 apples per day had higher sexual satisfaction scores than women who ate less than two apples per week.

Not only can diet contribute to a more fulfilling sexuality, it can also help keep genitals from losing size / volume with age.

In women after menopause, there is a gradual decrease in the volume of the vulva (thickness and consistency of the lips and clitoris) and in men the fibrosis associated with natural aging leads to a slight decrease in the size of the penis.

A balanced diet containing antioxidant foods (apples, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, walnuts, coffee almonds etc.) helps reduce the loss of volume in our genitals. This is useful to keep as much as possible the capacities of physical sexual pleasure in women by maintaining a good “consistency” of the genital area. This effect, which limits the decrease in penis size with age, will be well appreciated by men.
