First birth in France following a uterus transplant

“It is an immense joy, it is the height of satisfaction, it is the culmination of a project for the patient and for the family and for the team!”, Exclaims Professor Jean-Marc Ayoubi, obstetrician-gynecologist at Foch hospital in the Paris region.

With his team, he performed the first uterus transplant in France on March 31, 2019. The organ was donated by the mother of the patient who was born without a uterus. And in July, pregnancy began in this graft over 50 years old.

Two possible pregnancies thanks to the transplant

The delivery must have been started after 8 months of pregnancy because of the onset of hypertension in the mother. The recent scars from the transplant have required a cesarean section. Born Friday February 12th, the little girl weighing 1.845 kg breathes very well on her own. And, the uterus is also doing well, ready for a second pregnancy. “It is planned to authorize two pregnancies and the uterus must be removed after the second pregnancy in principle, explains Professor Ayoubi. There are other patients around the world who have had two pregnancies and who have given birth normally. “
