Pollution: is sport in the city dangerous for health?

Scientists from the French Society of Cardiology are warning about the potential dangers of outdoor sports. A study involving a cohort of nearly 1,500,000 young adults aged 20 to 39 has shown that one hour and a half of running per week reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 40%.

On the other hand, if the environment is polluted the benefits are canceled out, even the threat of cardiovascular disease can increase by up to 30%.

Indeed, when we play sports, we increase our ventilation. The air, which goes from our mouth to our pulmonary alveoli, is filled with micro-particles which enter the bloodstream via the pulmonary capillaries.

Take into account the level of pollution

However, it is always recommended to practice a physical activity even in the city. Here are some tips for urban athletes:

  • Find a “green environment” for their daily exercise, and avoid the proximity of road traffic
  • Avoid playing sports during rush hour
  • Favor rainy or windy weather, which reduces urban pollution
  • Consult the weather and air quality survey sites in your city.
